Questions, answered.
How MoneyBook works out your daily number, handles bills, and keeps your data on your phone. The same answers as the app's built-in help.
Getting started
What is MoneyBook?
A private expense tracker that turns your income and bills into one number: what is safe to spend today. You log what you spend, and it keeps your history, stats and budget up to date.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no login and no bank connection. Everything stays on your phone.
What does the setup ask for?
Your look (light, dark or match phone), currency, monthly income, pay day, fixed bills and what is in your accounts today. Every step can be skipped and changed later in Settings.
I skipped the setup. How do I set a budget now?
Open Today and tap Set up budget, or go to Settings, then Income & pay day. Once an income is saved, your daily limit appears.
Can I change which screen opens first?
Yes. In Settings, tap Home screen and pick Activity or Today. The one you pick opens at launch and takes the first place in the bottom bar.
Daily limit and budget
How is "Safe to spend today" worked out?
Start with your monthly income. Take away your fixed bills and your savings goal, and what you have already spent since your last pay day. Divide what is left by the days until your next pay day. That is today's limit. The big number is that limit minus what you have spent today.
Why is my limit lower than my income suggests?
When MoneyBook follows your account balances, the limit never goes above what your money can actually cover until pay day. It takes the money in your everyday accounts, keeps back the bills still due before pay day, and spreads the rest over the days left. Savings, investments and loans are not counted as money to spend.
What does "Short before pay day" mean?
The bills due before your next pay day need more than your accounts hold. Your limit shows 0 and Today tells you how much more you need. It clears once money comes in or the bills are paid.
How do I turn balance following on or off?
It turns on when you enter your balances during setup. You can switch it in Settings, then Income & pay day, under "Follow my account balances".
Why does Today ask if my salary came in?
On pay day, MoneyBook asks once so your balances stay true. Tap Log it to add your salary as income, or Not yet to be asked again later.
Why did my daily limit change from yesterday?
It is recalculated every day from what is left. Spend less than the limit and tomorrow's goes up; spend more and it goes down.
What does "Left this cycle" mean?
The money still available until your next pay day, after bills and savings. A cycle runs from one pay day to the next, not from the 1st of the month.
What happens when I go over?
The number turns red and shows how far over you are. Nothing is blocked. The amount over is spread across the remaining days, so the next days' limits are a little lower.
My pay day is the 29th, 30th or 31st. What about shorter months?
The cycle resets on the last day of a shorter month. A pay day of the 31st resets on the 30th in April and the 28th or 29th in February.
What is the savings goal?
An amount you want to keep aside each month. It is taken out before the daily limit is worked out, like a bill you pay yourself. Set it in Settings, then Income & pay day.
Does income I log change the daily limit?
Your plan is based on the monthly income saved in Income & pay day. When balance following is on, logged income also raises your account balances, so a low limit can go back up to the plan.
What is the streak at the top of Today?
The number of days in a row on which you logged at least one transaction yourself. Bill payments do not count.
Fixed bills
What counts as a fixed bill?
Anything that costs the same each time: rent, a loan, insurance, a subscription. Bills that change each month, like electricity, are better added as normal expenses.
How do fixed bills affect my budget?
They are set aside first. Your daily limit is worked out from what is left after all fixed bills, so paying them never eats into your daily spending. Rent paid a few times a year is set aside evenly every month.
Does MoneyBook log my bills for me?
No. On a bill's day you get a reminder, and MoneyBook asks you to mark it paid. It is logged only when you do, on the date you paid. Bills you mark as paid automatically (direct debit) are the exception: those are logged on their day without asking.
What is "Bills to confirm"?
The sheet that opens from a bill reminder, or when you open the app on a day a bill is due or overdue. Tap Mark as paid for each one, change the amount if it was different, or pick another day if you paid earlier. Not yet leaves it unpaid and reminds you the next morning.
I already paid this month's bill. What do I do?
When you add a bill, tick "Paid for" this month and choose the day you paid. It is logged on that date and you will not be asked again until next month. For an existing bill, open Settings, then Fixed bills, and tap Mark as paid.
What is "Paid automatically"?
For bills taken by direct debit or standing instruction. Tick it on the bill and it is logged on its day without a reminder, including days you did not open the app.
What do Overdue and Due mean in Fixed bills?
Each bill shows where it stands: Paid for the month, Due on a day still to come, Due today, or Overdue since the day it was due and not yet marked paid.
What if I log a bill myself as an expense?
When you add an expense with the same amount in the bill's category, or with the bill's name in the note, MoneyBook recognises it as that bill's payment. It is not asked about again and does not count against your daily limit a second time.
How does rent work?
Rent is a special category. Enter the yearly rent, how you pay it (every month, or 6, 4, 3, 2 or 1 payments a year), when your lease started and how many payments are left. MoneyBook works out the dates and counts the earlier ones as paid. See it all in Settings: tap Go to spaces, then Rent.
I changed a bill. Why is this month's payment the same?
Changes apply from next month by default, so a payment already logged stays as it was. When editing the bill you can tick "Update this month's payment too" to change it as well.
Can I edit or delete a bill payment?
Yes. Tap it in Activity to edit, or swipe left to delete. If you delete it, the bill will be asked about again.
What happens to past payments if I delete a bill?
They stay in your history. Deleting a bill only stops future reminders and payments.
Why does it say my bills add up to more than my income?
Your fixed bills are higher than the income you entered, which leaves nothing for a daily limit. Check both figures in Settings.
Adding and editing
How do I add an expense?
Tap the + button. Enter the amount, pick a category and account, choose the day, add a note if you like, and save. Use the switch at the top to add income or a transfer instead.
Can I do sums on the keypad?
Yes. Use + − × ÷ and the amount is worked out for you, for example 45 + 12.50.
How do I add something for a past day?
On the date step, tap one of the last five days or pick any earlier day in the calendar. Tap the month name to jump to another month or year. In Activity you can also tap the + next to a day.
Why can't I pick a future date?
Transactions record what has already happened, so days after today are disabled. For regular future costs, use a fixed bill.
How do I edit or delete a transaction?
In Activity, tap a transaction to edit it. Swipe it left to delete.
What is a transfer?
Moving money between two of your own accounts, for example from your bank to cash. It changes both balances but is not counted as spending or income.
Can I reuse a note?
Yes. On the note step your recent notes appear as chips. Tap one to use it again.
What is the Car expenses category?
A special category with its own space for fuel, Salik, parking and other car costs. It appears at the top when you pick a category for an expense, and has its own space: in Settings, tap Go to spaces. Rent is the other special category.
Accounts and categories
How are account balances worked out?
From the balance you entered for the account, plus income and transfers in, minus expenses and transfers out.
How do I add or edit an account?
Go to Settings, then Accounts, or Stats, then the Accounts tab. Tap + Add account, or tap an account to rename it, change its type or balance, or delete it. You can also add one while adding a transaction or a bill.
What is net worth?
Everything you hold (cash, bank, savings) minus what you owe (cards, loans). Accounts you exclude from totals are left out.
How do credit cards and loans work?
Add them as accounts of type Card or Loan. They count as money you owe, so they lower your net worth, and they are not offered when you add an expense or income. To pay one off, add a transfer from your bank to it. Once it is paid in full it shows 0 and Paid off.
How do I add my own categories?
Go to Settings, then Categories, and tap + Add category. You can also add one on the spot while adding a transaction or a fixed bill.
Can a category have subcategories?
Car expenses has subcategories such as fuel and parking, and you can add your own to it. Other categories are a single level.
Activity and stats
What do the four Activity views show?
Daily lists every day of the month with its transactions. Calendar shows each day's total on a month grid. Monthly shows income, spending and the net for each month. Summary shows the month's totals by category. The Balance box at the top shows the money in your accounts, like your bank does.
What is a no-spend day?
A day on which you logged no spending of your own. Bill payments do not count against it.
How do category budgets work?
In Stats, open the Budget tab and tap Set budget next to a category. The bar shows how much of that budget you have used this month.
What is the By note tab?
It groups the month's transactions by the note you gave them, so you can see what you spent on Lunch or Taxi regardless of category.
Why are fixed bills shown separately in Stats?
They are already set aside in your budget, so the spending charts focus on the money you choose how to spend. Bills still count in your totals and balances.
